Tribal tattoos in Phuket.
Bold tribal and blackwork designs for arms, shoulders and larger placements.
Shape and negative space do the work.
Tribal tattoos are read through silhouette, rhythm and the relationship between solid black and open skin. A design can look balanced on paper but feel completely different once it wraps around an upper arm, shoulder or forearm.
For larger tribal work, photographs of the full area are useful. They help the artist understand where the design begins and ends and how it will interact with joints, muscle shape and existing tattoos.
Shoulder & upper arm
Circular and sweeping forms can be planned to work around the shoulder cap and upper arm.
Forearm
Longer tapered designs can follow the forearm while keeping strong negative-space channels.
Sleeve extensions
Existing tribal work can sometimes be extended by creating a new pattern that works with the weight, flow and direction of the original tattoo.
Geometric blackwork
More structured blackwork can use repeated shapes and symmetry rather than traditional tribal curves.

The best tribal work is shaped to the body.
Because tribal work depends so much on the exact placement, an existing reference may need to be redrawn rather than simply resized. This is especially important for shoulders, sleeves and wraparound pieces.
For larger projects, send front and side photographs of the area and let us know about any existing tattoos you would like the new design to connect with or work around.
Tribal tattoo questions.
Can you extend an old tribal tattoo?
Possibly. Send clear photographs of the existing work so the new section can be assessed for line weight, pattern and placement.
Can a tribal design wrap around the arm?
Yes. Wraparound work should be planned for the full circumference rather than designed from one flat front view.
Do tribal tattoos have to be solid black?
Bold black is common, but the exact approach depends on the reference. Some designs also use negative space or softer grey sections.
Do I need a consultation for a tribal sleeve?
Larger connected pieces benefit from planning the boundaries, placement and overall flow before tattooing begins
